ASARUM canadense

This spring wildflower has dark green, kidney-shaped leaves that form above the cup-shaped, maroon-brown flowers. The flowers appear in spring on ground-level stems that appear at the base of the leaves. Plants spread slowly by rhizomes to form a nice groundcover and grow best in medium to moist but well-drained soil. If grown in heavy shade plants prefer acidic soils with consistent moisture.
